Different from the usual weak performance in July, international air freight maintains robust demand, mainly fueled by the explosive export growth of high-tech products centered on AI hardware.
Official trade statistics indicate that China's exports of cloud computing equipment rose 114.4% year-on-year from January to May 2026, while semiconductor equipment exports increased by 91.5%. Servers, optical modules, circuit boards and AI computing equipment are continuously delivered to Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. Such high-value, time-sensitive goods prefer air transportation and become the core support for air freight rates. According to IATA statistics, AI cargo makes up merely 7% of global air cargo weight, but contributes more than 50% of total air freight value.
Compared with general consumer goods, AI equipment has stricter transportation requirements. Most products demand shock-resistant packaging, stable temperature control and low transfer frequency to avoid equipment damage. Many air freight agents launch dedicated high-tech cargo handling procedures, providing customized loading, supervision and whole-process tracking services to meet special logistics standards of the technology industry.
Logistics analysts pointed out that this structural demand change reshapes the development logic of international air cargo. In the past, air freight relied heavily on cross-border e-commerce parcels; currently, high-tech industrial goods gradually become the long-term stabilizer of air freight market. Although the market enters traditional off-season, Asia-Europe and Trans-Pacific air routes avoid sharp freight declines due to continuous tech cargo orders.
Forwarders issued operational tips to technology manufacturers. First, arrange shipment plans ahead of schedule and confirm cabin availability several weeks in advance. Second, standardize commodity classification and document information to lower customs inspection risks for electronic equipment. Third, select professional agents experienced in transporting sensitive high-value cargo, to reduce potential losses caused by improper operation during transit. As overseas data center construction accelerates, the transportation demand for AI hardware is expected to keep rising throughout the second half of 2026.
